Human Rights in Indonesia Has Come Under Scrutiny

PowerNetizen.com – Recently, the state of human rights (HR) in Indonesia has come under scrutiny, particularly concerning policies and implementations that are viewed as suppressing civil freedoms. Amnesty International Indonesia highlighted several cases, such as the use of treason laws to target activists in Papua and Maluku for expressing their opinions peacefully. From 2020 to 2023, at least 86 individuals were criminalized under accusations of treason, with some activists still facing legal proceedings in 2024.

Moreover, digital attacks, including hacking and doxxing, against human rights defenders, journalists, and academics have increased. The Information and Electronic Transactions Law continues to be employed to curtail peaceful criticism, despite revisions. Problematic articles within the law remain intact, frequently used to stifle freedom of expression.

In the context of elections, there is pressure to ensure civil rights are respected, as guaranteed by Indonesia’s constitution and international standards. However, reports indicate that civil liberties continue to be at risk due to regulations enacted with minimal public participation.
