PowerNetizen.com – Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, Sugiono, officially expressed the nation’s intention to join the BRICS economic bloc during the BRICS Plus Summit in Kazan, Russia, on October 24, 2024. This move reflects Indonesia’s foreign policy principles of independence and active engagement. Sugiono emphasized that joining BRICS does not signify aligning with a particular bloc but rather demonstrates Indonesia’s commitment to active participation in various international forums.

Sugiono stated that BRICS offers a strategic platform to address shared interests among Global South nations and to strengthen international cooperation. During the summit, he proposed three concrete steps to enhance collaboration between BRICS and developing nations, including promoting sustainable development and ensuring the fulfillment of commitments by developed countries.

Russia has also expressed its support for Indonesia as a potential BRICS member. The Russian Ambassador remarked that even though Indonesia might initially join as a partner, its representatives can actively participate in BRICS activities. This underscores appreciation for Indonesia’s inclusive diplomatic approach and its commitment to solidarity among developing nations.
