Maumere, PowerNetizen.com – Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano erupted on Saturday, sending towering columns of ash and volcanic debris into the sky. This comes days after a significant eruption on Monday that resulted in nine fatalities and numerous injuries.

Volcanic activity has intensified since Monday’s initial eruption, prompting authorities to expand the danger zone on Thursday. The most recent eruption on Friday saw the largest ash plume yet, reaching a height of 10 kilometers. The volcano continued to erupt on Saturday, with multiple ash plumes rising up to 9 kilometers.

The eruption has caused widespread damage, affecting schools, homes, churches, and other infrastructure. The impact zone extends up to 8 kilometers from the crater, with craters as large as 13 meters wide and 5 meters deep forming due to falling rocks.

Thousands of residents have been displaced by the volcanic activity. Authorities are working to evacuate approximately 16,000 people from the danger zone, and over 10,000 people have already sought refuge in emergency shelters.

The government has pledged to relocate residents from the hardest-hit areas within six months and provide monthly compensation to families during the relocation process.

The volcanic ash has also disrupted air travel, leading to the closure of several airports in the region. Lewotobi Laki Laki is one of Indonesia’s 120 active volcanoes, and the country’s geographic location along the Ring of Fire makes it susceptible to frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
